Trade agreement: India-MERCOSUR PTA
The India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement — signed 2004, in force since 2009 — covers roughly 450 tariff lines on each side with margin-of-preference concessions of 10–100%. Concessions include selected Indian pharma, textiles, chemicals, engineering goods, iron and steel, plastics, and agricultural produce. India and Mercosur have been negotiating an expansion of the PTA into a broader Free Trade Agreement covering 2,000+ lines. Talks resumed in 2023.
Rank: India is Brazil's largest Asian trading partner after China. Brazil is India's largest export destination in Latin America.
Beyond the PTA: lines outside PTA coverage attract the Mercosur Common External Tariff (TEC). Indian exporters remain competitive on quality-adjusted price for pharma raw material, spices, cotton and man-made textiles, engineering castings, and handicrafts.

Brazilian customs applies the Common External Tariff (TEC) on lines outside the India-MERCOSUR PTA. IPI (federal excise), ICMS (state VAT, 12–20% depending on state), PIS/COFINS (federal contributions), and AFRMM (freight surcharge) all layer onto the landed cost. The DI (Declaração de Importação) captures all of them. ANVISA regulates all pharma, cosmetics, and health-food imports; product registration is the Brazilian importer's responsibility, but we supply the full manufacturer dossier upfront. MAPA regulates agri and animal-origin. NCM (Nomenclatura Comum do Mercosul) is the 8-digit Mercosur classification that maps to HS at the 6-digit level. We file both.
Frequently asked: India to Brazil
How do I import from India to Brazil under the India-MERCOSUR PTA?
The India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement covers roughly 450 tariff lines with margin-of-preference concessions of 10–100%. Request a Certificate of Origin under India-MERCOSUR PTA from your Indian supplier; Darsavio EXIM issues it through the EIC. With the COO attached to your Declaração de Importação (DI), Receita Federal applies the reduced ad-valorem duty on eligible HS lines. For lines outside PTA coverage, standard Mercosur Common External Tariff (TEC) applies.
Can I import Indian pharma raw materials into Brazil for ANVISA-regulated products?
Yes. Indian API and phyto-pharma raw material (ashwagandha, curcumin, standardised extracts) ships routinely to São Paulo pharma corridors. We supply the ANVISA-compliant dossier per consignment: CoA per batch, DMF/CEP references, GMP certificate (WHO-GMP or PIC/S), heavy-metal panels, residual-solvent panels, and stability data. ANVISA registration of the finished product is the Brazilian importer's responsibility; we supply the manufacturer-side dossier.
How long does ocean shipping from India to Brazil take?
28–35 days from Nhava Sheva (JNPT) or Mundra to Santos on direct services; 32–38 days to Rio de Janeiro, Paranaguá, or Suape. Transshipment via Salalah or Algeciras adds 3–7 days. Air freight via GRU/VCP from DEL/BOM in 2–4 days for pharma and high-value consignments.
Do you issue quotations and paperwork in Portuguese for Brazilian buyers?
Yes. Every proforma, invoice, and buyer-facing document is issued in Portuguese on request: INCOTERMS, HS classification, and NCM equivalence stated in both languages so your despachante aduaneiro (customs broker) can file the DI without ambiguity. English versions travel alongside for the shipping documentation set.
Which Indian ports serve Brazil best, and what are the destination options?
Nhava Sheva (JNPT) and Mundra are the primary Atlantic-service gateways. Chennai handles South-Indian-origin cargo. Destination options in Brazil: Santos (largest, São Paulo hinterland), Rio de Janeiro (northeast pharma corridor), Paranaguá (agri and grains), Suape (northeast industrial), and Itapoá for South-region distribution.
What documentation is required for import from India to Brazil?
Commercial Invoice · Packing List · Bill of Lading · Certificate of Origin (India-MERCOSUR PTA where applicable) · Phytosanitary Certificate from DPPQS (for agri, spices, rice) · ANVISA-compliant dossier (for pharma) · MAPA-compliant certificate (for animal-origin) · ISPM-15 fumigation certificate on wooden pallets · CoA per batch.
